If you've ever visited your WordPress site and seen a plain list of files and folders instead of your website, you're dealing with the "Index of /" error. It happens when the server can't find an index file to load. Here's a quick walkthrough on fixing it.
What Causes the Index Of Error?
- The wrong directory is set as the web root in your hosting control panel.
- The index.php file is missing or was accidentally deleted from your install.
- The .htaccess file is missing or corrupted, so requests aren't being routed to WordPress.
How to Fix It
- Make sure your site files (especially index.php) are in the correct folder — usually public_html.
- Re-upload a clean copy of index.php from a fresh WordPress download if it's missing.
- Check that .htaccess exists and regenerate it from Settings → Permalinks in WordPress if needed.
- Confirm your domain's document root points at the folder that actually contains index.php.
Once the correct index file is in place, refresh your browser and your WordPress site will load normally again.
